I spent time in-store selecting a guitar and discussing pricing. Based on that discussion, the guitar was taken to a luthier for setup to my preferences, and I returned later in the week to complete the purchase.
At the point of payment, the price was increased. I was told the earlier price had expired a few days earlier, which would have been around the same day I had asked for the setup. This was never mentioned during several days of WhatsApp communication, nor at any point before reaching the till, which I found confusing and frustrating.
On my return visit after the setup, the interaction with the guitar technician felt rushed as he was practicing for a gig and the wrong guitar was initially given to me. When I was given the correct guitar and pointed out a noticeable buzz on the D string at the first fret, I expected a technical check of things like nut height and neck relief. Instead, the response centered around how I was picking and felt dismissive rather than collaborative. These may seem like small details, but together they add to the sense that care and communication are lacking.
I had another guitar with me at the time that I was about to leave for additional work, but chose to take it home and stop dealing with this store. I asked the guitar technician to ask management if they could honor the initial price. What made the situation worse was then being told over WhatsApp that another customer was interested in the guitar and that I should return quickly to secure it. This made me feel under pressure to proceed at the higher price, while also being aware that another musician could now miss out on an instrument that had already been adjusted for me. That situation could easily have been avoided and further undermined my confidence in the store’s process.
I’ve dealt with some excellent music stores over the last 25 years, and I often tell my students that a good music shop should feel like a community built on dialogue and good faith. This was my first time dealing with Melody House, and unfortunately that wasn’t my experience. I felt treated more like a transaction than a person.
I hope management reflects on how situations like this are handled, particularly for customers who approach a music shop expecting a relationship, not a rushed and pressure-driven sell. I will not be recommending Melody House to others.

Don’t take me wrong, the shop is great and the staff is probably knowledgeable. Just a big warning to wear your anti-snob helmet before you step in. I am new to music and despite mastering heavy engineering fields, graphic arts and collecting other skill sets, I have been reminded that you need to be pro to be worth it (or to sound like a pro would be more accurate). I like to help newbies in my disciplines, not lecture them.
